dakota seriously started developing their rap skills in 2007 in cipher circles with Youth Speaks Seattle to prepare for their first journey to the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam. The opportunity came when dakota and their sisters moved to heal from the trauma of living in a American Navy Town.
While living in Oak Harbor, dakota tried to explain the current conditions of the world to them-self through writing. In Seattle, the youth poetry community challenged dakota to grow into both a writer and a youth organizer.
Through building partnerships with YouthSpeaks, the Hidmo, The Northwest Network and AFSC, dakota organized all-ages hip hop shows in the Central District, which featured youth and local hip hop performers and organizers.
After attending Rainier Beach High School, dakota decided finish high school in the and participate on the national policy debate circuit (Two-Time State Champion, I'm the coolest nerd).
dakota studied hip hop at the Katalyst Project, a youth-centered hip program dedicated to engaging youth to find self-sustainability through art. After graduating from the program, they continued working with the program and eventually received a full tuition scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, through the First Wave Urban Arts Learning Community.
As a college student, dakota's working to use their privilege to decolonize the work of liberation of all peoples. You can find dakota in your local cipher circle battling ignorant assholes, and challenging homophobes to be more creative.
dakota has clearly studied the flow of Big L, Elzhi's rhyme schemes, Lupe's versatility, the energy of KRS-ONE, and the lyrical poise of the Slaughterhouse squad. However, dakota tries to put the human back on the stage and take the ignorant consumerism, the sexism, and the homophobia out of the music.
They've had the opportunity to rock shows with Dead Prez, Blue Scholars, Jesse Jackson, Invincible, Los Rakas, Black Milk, Beau Sia, Lah Tere, Rebel Diaz (Arts Collective), Intikana, Ruby Ibarra, Canary Sing, 1st Quarter Storm, Khingz, Gabriel Teodros, Language Arts, Climbing PoeTree, Rafael Casal, Mami Watu, Emiko Sugiyama, and hundreds of youth poets from all over the Occupied Indigenous Land and Europe including: Houston, Texas Providence, Rhode Island, Hampton Roads, Virginia, Leeds, England, Urban Word, New York, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Washington D.C. Alberquque, New Mexico.
He is now an active member of the Madison Hip Hop Movement alongside the likes of Ashlyn Elizabeth, ¡Oye!, Kid Quo, JDante, MC Star, and Phonetic One.
